Contest entry for to be blind by :iconanimefanfics:
I hope you guys like this short entry!

¸ ¬ ∆

Winter came early that year.

To be honest, he much liked the cold, there was something so awakening about the flakes of frozen water, something that had always intrigued the man. Perhaps it was the way light seemed to filter into every shiny flake of snow, something that was always able to catch his eyes.

You see, there was a misconception about being blinded, you’re expected to be trapped in a forever-entangled blackness, but that wasn’t the case, not for Kiku Honda at least. No, he was able to grasp onto fleeting twinkles of light, only produced when in the winter. It was a white blindness, a beautiful white blindness which seemed to forever trick him, the alluring excitement it seemed to fall upon Kiku. No one else seemed to see what he saw, no one at all. The snow crunched against his bear feet as he padded across the small patio, he could hear it, the absolute silence—something he very much appreciated. The scent, the strong scent of cold hit his nose taking him back for a moment. “Lovely.” It had been a while since he could honestly say he wanted to be outside, so this, once, grand opportunity snuck up on him. Early November and winter was already upon them, how strange, how peculiar. “Breathtaking.” He added, dull brown eyes dancing across the small flecks of snow that seemed to fall in drizzles. “I can see every last one of them, they’re so pretty.” He added, smiling fondly up to the speckles that danced across the early morning sky.

No normal sighted person would be able to appreciate this….this mystical wonderland before him. Oh, it’s just snowing, and? No it was something more, something more to be cherished as he’d stated. Once a year he’d be able to see, really see something in depth and it delighted him beyond belief.

For once in a long time, Kiku found being blinded a blessing rather than a curse. The ability to find the beauty in imperfections...Kiku was finally accepting himself.

A very very short entry, I wanted it to just be a looking glass into the laugh of a blind person. This was a lot of fun to write, and I’m glad I participated! I think the other entries are simply breath taking as well and I hope everyone had a great time!

Incase you're lost!: I thought it was interesting how many people perceive legally blind people as absolutely in the dark. That’s simply not true for all blinded people. Sure there are those who have absolutely no concept of vision and rely on sounds and tastes, but then there are those special cases of people who gradually lost their sight to this point. Only in the most perfect conditions is it ever possible to see anything but when they do it’s as if stepping into a new world, it’s cherished every time. This is how I wanted to perceive Japan.
